Poland, US sign contract for Patriot defence systems
Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak signed a contract on Wednesday for the purchase of US Patriot air and missile defence systems as part of the Polish Wisla air defence programme.
Minister Blaszczak presented the signed deal to US Ambassador to Poland Paul W. Jones.
In November 2017, the US Congress approved the sale of arms to Poland, including the Patriot anti-ballistic missile system.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Tuesday that "the first Patriot systems will reach Poland in 2022, followed by further systems two years later, in 2024."
Present at the signing ceremony were President Andrzej Duda, PM Mateusz Morawiecki, National Security Bureau head Pawel Soloch, government officials and army commanders.
The value of the deal is USD 4.75 billion.
